What is Tono Hinoki?
This cypress is produced in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture.
Eastern Mino (also known as Urakiso), known as the Tono region, has been a timber producing area since the Muromachi period, and was protected as an exclave of the Owari domain, especially during the Edo period.
In particular, domestic timber produced in the Tono region is famous for being used as sacred wood in the Shikinen Sengu ceremony at Ise Shrine.
Its characteristics are its fine and uniform annual ring width, its nearly circular core, its pink color and glossy texture, and its strong fragrance. It also has many other attractive features, such as beautiful grain and good toughness.
