<What is Tono Hinoki?>
It is cypress produced in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture.
The Mino Eastern region, known as the Tono region (also called Urakiso), has been a timber producing area since the Muromachi period, and was particularly protected as an enclave of the Owari domain during the Edo period.
Domestically produced timber from the Tono region is especially famous for being used as sacred trees in the Shikinen Sengu (periodic reconstruction) of Ise Jingu Shrine.
Its characteristics include fine and uniform annual rings with a core close to the center, pinkish wood with a luster, and a rich fragrance. It possesses numerous attractive features such as beautiful grain and excellent tenacity.
