Ukuri processing is a finishing method where the surface of wood is repeatedly rubbed to create an uneven grain and highlight the growth rings. In kanji, it is written as "浮造り" (ukuri). The soft summer wood of cedar is scraped away, while the hard winter wood remains, creating a textured surface.
