＜What is Tono Hinoki?＞
Tono Hinoki is cypress produced in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture.
The Tono region, also known as Mino East (and sometimes called Urakiso), has been a timber producing area since the Muromachi period, and was particularly protected as an exclave of the Owari domain during the Edo period.
Domestically produced timber from the Tono region is famous for being used as sacred trees in the Shikinen Sengu (periodic reconstruction) of Ise Grand Shrine.
Its characteristics include fine and uniform annual rings with the core close to the center, a pink and lustrous material, and a rich fragrance. It possesses many attractive features such as beautiful grain and good tenacity.
