Morishio is salt that is placed on a small plate and placed at the entrance or in a room. It is said to have the effect of removing bad luck, and it is done regardless of the type of house, whether it is a single-family home or an apartment.
The origin of the salt mounding is that seawater has the power to remove sins and impurities. It is thought to have originally been a Chinese custom that was brought to Japan, and has been practiced in Japan since ancient times.
The culture of placing salt on a pile was introduced to Japan during the Heian period, when it was believed that placing salt on the entrance to one's house would invite a person of high status riding on an oxcart. Gradually, salt on a pile came to be seen as a sign of good luck, and eventually took on its present form.
