■Koishiwara ware, a ceramic condiment dish with the Tobikanna technique.
What is Koishiwara ware?
It is pottery fired in "Toho Village," located in the central-south part of Fukuoka Prefecture. In a peaceful mountainous area with vast rural landscapes, about 50 kilns produce ceramics. It is a prime example of utilitarian pottery used in daily life, with traditional techniques passed down for approximately 350 years. They have pursued the concept of "beauty in utility" that serves everyday life.
What is Tobikanna?
It's a design with a series of "dots, dots, dots..." that can be described as somewhat geometric. The technique that creates the swirling appearance is called 'Tobikanna'. 'Tobikanna' is a simple pattern, yet it possesses a delicate balance and atmosphere that keeps dishes from looking bare.
