Edo Kiriko refers to the technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. It is said to have originated in 1834 when Kyūbei Kagaya, a glass shop owner in Ōdenma-chō, Edo, devised a method of engraving glass surfaces using carborundum. There is also an anecdote that among the gifts presented during Commodore Perry's arrival in 1853, there was a cut-glass bottle from Kagaya, and Perry was astonished by its craftsmanship. In the Meiji era, European cut-glass techniques were introduced, establishing a glass craft technique for applying various patterns to the glass surface. The cut-glass techniques have been passed down from person to person and continue to this day.
