Anodizing (anodic oxidation treatment) is a surface treatment that artificially forms an oxide film (aluminum oxide) on aluminum by electrolytically treating it at the anode (+ electrode).
Aluminum readily combines with oxygen and forms a very thin oxide film when exposed to air. Because it is protected by this naturally formed film, it is generally considered rust-resistant, or to have good corrosion resistance. However, since this film is very thin, it can corrode due to chemical reactions depending on the environment. Therefore, a surface treatment, namely anodizing, is necessary to protect the surface.
