Edo Kiriko (Edo cut glass) refers to the technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. Edo Kiriko is said to have originated in 1834 (Tenpo 5), when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass merchant in Odenmacho, Edo, devised a method of carving the surface of glass using emery. There is also an anecdote that when Commodore Perry's Black Ships arrived in 1853 (Kaei 6), a cut glass bottle by Kagaya was among the tribute items, and Perry was amazed by its craftsmanship. In the Meiji era, European cut glass techniques were introduced, establishing a glass craft technique that applied various patterns to the surface of the glass. The technique of cut glass has been passed down from person to person and continues to this day.
