Edo Kiriko is a technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. It is said to have originated in 1834, when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass dealer in Odemmacho, Edo, devised a method of engraving glass surfaces using emery powder. There is an anecdote that among the gifts presented during Commodore Perry's arrival with the Black Ships in 1853 was a cut-glass bottle from Kagaya, and Perry was astonished by its craftsmanship. In the Meiji era, European cut-glass techniques were introduced, establishing a glass craft technique that applies various patterns to the glass surface. The cut-glass technique has been passed down from person to person and continues to this day.
