Edo Kiriko refers to the technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. It is said that Edo Kiriko originated in 1834 when Kyūbei Kagaya, a glass shop owner in Ōdenmachi, Edo, devised a method of engraving glass surfaces using emery. There is also an anecdote that among the gifts presented to Commodore Perry upon his arrival with the Black Ships in 1853, there was a cut glass bottle by Kagaya, and Perry was surprised by its craftsmanship. In the Meiji era, European cut glass techniques were introduced, establishing the glass craft technique of applying various patterns to glass surfaces. The art of cut glass has been passed down from person to person and continues to this day.
