Edo Kiriko refers to the technique of cutting patterns into the surface of glass. It is said that Edo Kiriko began in 1834 (Tenpo 5) when Kyubei Kagaya, a glass shop owner in Odenmacho, Edo, devised a method for engraving glass surfaces using emery powder. There is also an anecdote that among the tribute gifts presented to Commodore Perry upon the arrival of his "Black Ships" in 1853 (Kaei 6) was a cut glass bottle from Kagaya, and Perry was astonished by its craftsmanship. In the Meiji era, European cut glass techniques were introduced, establishing a glass craft technique that applied various patterns to the glass surface. The cut glass technique has been passed down from person to person, continuing to this day.
